Then & There shows you what you photographed on this day in earlier years and recognizes trips and places in your library. Everything happens on the iPhone; your photos never leave the device.

Getting started

  1. Allow access - On first launch the app explains why it needs “All Photos”, then iOS asks once. With “Selected Photos” the app cannot build look-backs.
  2. Wait for indexing - The library is read once; 60,000 captures take a few seconds. A banner shows progress while the look-backs already fill up.
  3. Look at Today - Every photo of this date from earlier years, sorted by year. The arrows change the day, tapping the date opens the date picker.
  4. Flip through - The whole day as a story across all years. Tap right: next, left: back, hold: pause, swipe down: close. The year pill at the top jumps to another year.

Photos

Why are some tiles empty?

With “Optimize iPhone Storage” many originals live only in iCloud. The app shows the local preview first and then downloads a small version; that needs an internet connection. Offline, such tiles stay empty and the viewer shows “No connection”.

Are photos downloaded to my iPhone?

Only the ones you look at, at the size needed. The app keeps no image storage of its own; whatever iOS fetches from iCloud is managed and offloaded again by the system.

Are photos from the current year missing?

Yes, on purpose. Today shows look-backs, so earlier years only. Today’s own photos are in the Photos app.

Why are screenshots missing?

Screenshots are hidden by default. In Options you can show them, hide videos, or show favorites only.

Trips and places

How does the app recognize a trip?

From photos with a location: at least two consecutive days whose photos were taken more than 50 km from home. A day without locations in between does not break the trip. The distance can be changed in Options.

How does the app know where home is?

It estimates it from the places you photographed most in recent years. In Options you can set home on the map yourself.

Why are trips or places missing?

Photos without a location do not count. The camera only stores the location when it has location access. Images from messengers and screenshots usually have none.

Why is the map empty?

Map tiles come from Apple and need internet. Everything else in the app works offline.

Reminder

The daily reminder is a local notification. It only appears on days that have look-backs and is scheduled 60 days ahead whenever you open the app.

Re-indexing the library

If something looks wrong, use the “Library” row with the refresh symbol in Options: the app discards its index and reads everything again.
